To smudge or not to smudge.
Let's begin with the basics. "The word “smudging” comes from “smudge,” which is English in origin. However, the term has been used widely to refer to the smudging ceremonies of Indigenous peoples, in which sacred herbs and medicines are burned as part of a ritual, or for cleansing or health purposes". www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca
The concept of smudging is now used world wide and varying religious paths find the ritual effective in banishing negativity, be it in the form of a spirit, energy or mindset. Or it can be used to cleanse objects, spaces or persons.
The traditional ingredients is the herb is Sage - Salvia. Salvia has many sub species/categories and each imparts a subtle difference in the aroma. Yet still remaining true to the strong pungent scent. Adding a herb such as Lavender, Cedar wood and or Dragons Blood resin can amplify the power of the cleanse.
Sister Cassia stocks the Triple Goddess Smudge stick which contains Maiden Sage, Motherwort + Cronewort, wrapped in the wisdom of Grandmother Sage. These are hand hand made by Fluorescent Ranch.
"All the items by FLUORESCENT RANCH are either handmade in our shop or purchased directly from Native American and international Indigenous artists in TRULY fair trade practices. Our sages are hand picked in sustainable and traditional manners, and no artificial ingredients of any kind are ever used. What isn't wild crafted is organic--no fillers, perfumes, chemicals or pesticides of any kind. Ever." FLUPRESCENT RANCH (Grand Mesa - Colorado)
Directions for use: Light smudge stick and wait a moment, then blow out the flames. Fan (Using your hand or a feather) the embers to keep smoldering (may need to be re-lit). Use the smoke to "wash" persons, property or spaces. A shell or pottery to catch the ashes is a good idea. You can walk around the room fanning the smoke to reach each corner. Leave a window open for the "energy" to leave. Some say you should walk clockwise around the room, I find you can walk any way as long as window is open. Those who practice a craft will more than likely utter their words of intentions and would have called on their God or Goddess for assistance. If you don't follow a particular path calling out the negativity to leave is just as good.
You don't have to burn the whole stick, in fact your sick should last you quite some time unless you into ghost busting, that is!
When to smudge:
Smudge when energy is low.
When you buy a new healing stone or chakra bracelet.
When negativity is effecting you or your family.
When things feel out of balance.
Your instinct is the best warning bell.
